Hi, i was out walking my usual route with my dog and i noticed these fruits? Never noticed them before, and have no idea what they are. The plant resembles a sloe bush, but has no spikes. The fruits are about as long as the pad on my thumb. Can anyone help with a name? Id be most obliged. Tan
Could be an almond
? See what Pamela says
Hmmm… i’m not sure but i think you could be right with the almond guess @drmudlark
Perhaps one for the botany department @alexwalkerjones can we tag Michael here? I can’t seem to do that?
Wow really? I thought they only grew in hot countries? Crikey, i saw about 4 or 5 large bushes covered with them!?
If you are in the UK then that makes me doubt the almond idea… but they do look similar. I thought maybe medlar but the fruit is very different…
Am thinking!
Try using the INaturalist App and let us know what it comes up with. Agree that it has the appearance of an almond or something related.
Can you observe it over the next 4-6 weeks to see how it develops?
Google lens that i put through came back as almond
Absolutely, will do
Hello, i went along the walk this morning with the dog and the ‘fruits’ now look mouldy and shriveled. They have almost a mildrew grey dusty mould, and that isnt just on one branch, it is all the fruits on all the bushes. Have taken some more photos and also cut one open…the conundrum continues
If that is not an Almond tree, I’m stumped!
People do grow them in their gardens in uk especially in milder areas.
My feeling is that it is an almond that hasn’t borne seeds/nuts. Maybe not a self-pollinating variety (apparently there are both and most are not self-pollinating) so would have needed another nearby, but whether it can produce the fruit without the seed (some plants and crops can) i don’t know. Or genetic mutation or disease, again I dont know but the outer fleshy part also looked like almond to me.
Here is a pic from Gardener’s World:
My gin money is on that!
