Haemophilia and the wonderful world of plants

So I have haemophilia and every so often I think about it and the world around me.
Today was one of those days.

I got to wondering if there are any plants that would have adverse effects on my haemophilia. Any that I should avoid. Any that could potentially help.

Long shot I know because I can never find anything about this sort of stuff online but I was wondering if the collective mind of the treehouse would be able to shed some light on this.

In all my life the only other people I’ve known with haemophilia were my brothers and they know even less than me.

I don’t even have a specialist any more as I didn’t go to my yearly appointments due to my anxiety.
And my doctor is lacking in his knowledge about it. He has prescribed me medications that I really can’t take in the past.

My haemophilia is mild so this is more out of curiosity than any real worry.

Just tagging @pamelaspence and @dcasarett here in hopes they may be able to shed some light for you! I’m curious, from a nutritional/supplementary standpoint does it have anything to do with plants high in vitamin K?

Hmm I’ve never had vitamin k mentioned to me in regards to my haemophilia but that makes complete sense that it could have an effect.
That’s got the science part of my brain going now

Thanks for the tag @alexwalkerjones and for the question @lrakarid!

So there are some plants that you should avoid - these are ones that we know have a blood thinning effect. Turmeric is the most common one to keep an eye on - I wouldn’t worry about it in food, but would avoid it in the huge supplement doses that you get now.

Some herbs contain high amounts of a chemical called coumarins, and they can also have a blood thinning effect. But to be honest, you’re not likely to come across them in over the counter products and if you went to see a medical herbalist they would avoid them in your meds because of your haemophilia anyway.

I don’t know that there is anything you can take to improve it… And I’m not sure whether vitamin K would improve things because otherwise you could just eat a diet high in vitamin K (with lots of cruciferous veg and green leafy veg) and that would sort the issue out…

Am thinking… might go check with some other herbalists…

That’s really interesting.
I’ve only ever been told of pharmaceutical stuff to avoid and I can’t work out why I never thought about plants to avoid before.

I’m learning so much from this group and it’s opening my eyes to a world I had only seen the surface of before.

Thanks for the information
